Week 3: Texans vs. Chargers
Last Meeting: November 27, 2016 in NRG Stadium (Chargers def. Texans 21-13)
Back at you again with a prediction article. Later on today, the Texans will meet the Los Angeles Chargers in the city of LA! Both teams will enter this game 1-1 with an opportunity to finish with a record above .500. Both teams will feature elite QB’s, elite offenses, and an elite duo of pass rushers. In an effort to try to gain control of both their respective divisions, let’s see how both teams match-up against each other.
On paper, this game looks like it’s going to be a shootout. While both teams have respectable defenses, both the Texans and Chargers offense are too equipped with weapons for the opposite defense to slow down. For the Texans, you have Deshaun Watson, Deandre Hopkins, Kenny Stills, Will Fuller, Keke Coutee, Duke Johnson, and Carlos Hyde. For the Chargers, you have Phillip Rivers, Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams. When these offenses heat up, they are nearly impossible to stop. It’ll be up to the Texans pass rush tandem of J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus to provide enough pressure to stop the Chargers offense. Same goes to the Chargers pass rush duo of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram to get to Watson.
Of course, I see this game going two ways.
The defenses come to play, and the Texans win in a defensive battle
Although I expect this game to be a shootout, there is also a chance that this could be a defensive game as well. Both teams just finished playing a defensive game last week with the Texans defeating the Jaguars 13-12, and the Chargers losing a close battle with the Lions 10-13. This game, both defenses still may be hot and up to the challenge of slowing down the other team’s high-powered offense. If this game ends up to be a defensive game, the Texans will be in position to win. In the Bill O’Brien era, the Texans are 19-1 when they hold the opposing teams to 19 points or less. If they can hold the Chargers to less than 19 points, the Texans will win this game.
The Texans lose in another heartbreaking shootout
Let’s say the defenses don’t come to play, and they spend the game getting completely decimated by the opposing team’s offense. This game can be a shootout with more than 56 points being scored. This will be another game where Deshaun Watson will lead the Texans to another last minute comeback, only for the Texans defense to allow Phillip Rivers to drive down the field for a last minute FG. The Texans will lose in another heartbreaking shootout.
I see this game being close and being decided in the last minute. The Texans need a signature win in order to be taken serious. They have what it takes to come into Los Angeles and defeat the Chargers at their house. Therefore, I predict the Texans will show up and show out in this game. The Texans will leave LA 2-1
Final Score: Texans 23 Chargers 14
